Orchard Assault UMass 5-9-09

Jonathan and I went up to Amherst today to do the Orchard Assault mountain bike race. We both did the race last year and knew it was going to be a good time. This course reminds me of being a kid of about 12 when BMX bikes were first coming out. We had trails everywhere around town, through peoples back yards, connecting the different wooded areas, along the train tracks and the creek, we had a blast. The course basically consists of tight switch back single track down a hill, then back up, then back down and up again then........around a field, repeat. With the rain last night and into this morning the trails were slick. This was definitely a technical course. Not real fast, but you had to really pay attention with all the switch backs.

They started all the cat.2 riders together. I guess there were around 28 racers. I got a pretty good start and moved up more during the first lap. Jonathan was a little farther back, but by the end of the fourth lap he rode into 7th place. I ended up getting 6th. Kerensa, Jonathan's girlfriend came with us and was great, taking pictures and helping us with bottles.

This is a really fun, low key race that I think will continue to grow in the coming years.
